Research Project Description

Interested in how couples interact in everyday life? Curious about how marital support influences health and well-being? Enjoy watching reality TV? This study of naturalistic marital support uses a really interesting and novel dataset of videotaped family interactions that were filmed in families’ homes as they went about their everyday lives. We are studying what these supportive interactions look like in the real-world, outside of what researchers have found in laboratory studies, and investigating the linkages between naturalistic support, marital satisfaction, health, and well-being. RAs will receive mentored training in naturalistic observational research methods in a friendly research group headed by a clinical graduate student (Shu-wen Wang, M.A.) working with Professor Rena Repetti. The project provides excellent exposure to couples research at the intersection of clinical, social, and health psychology.

RA Responsibilities

RAs’ main responsibility is to code marital support interactions. There is also some light data management that accompanies the coding efforts. All RAs are expected to devote 8 hours per week to the project, that consist of approximately: 5 hours of coding, 2 hours of partner meeting, 1 hour of team meeting. RA hours are fairly flexible. You are required to attend a scheduled 1 hour team meeting (for Summer Session C, this has been scheduled for Wednesdays 1:15-2:15), but your own coding is completed on your own schedule and your partner meetings are flexibly scheduled with your partner.

Who Should Apply

1. No prior research experience is necessary, but potential RAs must be dedicated, motivated, responsible, and enthusiastic about gaining research experience.
2. You must be able to commit Summer Session C, Fall 2010, and Winter 2011 to working on the study. This means a continued 8 hour weekly commitment. I CANNOT replace RAs part-way through the study so your ability to make this commitment is critical.
3. You may receive research units OR volunteer as an RA.

How to Apply

Interested applicants should email Shu-wen Wang, M.A., at shuwenwang[at]ucla.edu with a resume and DPR. We will schedule a very brief interview, and we will begin training starting Summer Session C.

Research Project Description

We are an outpatient clinical research program at NPI that specializes in the study and treatment of anxiety and related disorders in children and adolescents up to the age of 18. Our primary goal is to provide effective treatments for youngsters suffering from anxiety disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourettes and other tic disorders, and Selective Mutism. Currently our program has several NIMH funded multi-site research studies.

Student Responsibilities

Students will have the opportunity work on treatment studies for children/adolescents diagnosed with various anxiety disorders. Student’s primary responsibilities include scoring clinical measures, data entry and management, as well as some administrative/clerical tasks. As students gain experience, more clinical interactions with children may become available. Great opportunity for those interested in gaining research experience for graduate school as well as those interested in learning more about treatment focused research.

Children’s Emotion Regulation: A Naturalistic Study of Negative Emotions Expressions in the Home

This is a descriptive study based on a naturalistic video-based investigation of children and parents in their homes. For one week, videographers filmed parents and their children (aged 8-12) in their homes and in community settings. We will be examining instances of children’s expressions of negative emotions in 30 families by watching video footage and coding a series of descriptive variables, such as the cause, target, duration, and intensity of the expressions. This study will help to develop a broader picture of how, when, and why children express negative emotions and how these variables are associated with mood and anxiety and physiological stress indices. Emotion expression in children is typically examined in laboratory settings or via self-report measures, so this will give RAs an opportunity to be involved in a novel approach to emotion research. There is a possibility for RAships to extend into Fall quarter if students are interested in continuing with the next stages of the project.

Requirements

1. 8-10 hours per week throughout the summer sessions (hours are flexible except for one hour weekly meeting to be scheduled).
2. No research experience required.

How to Apply

Please send a resume and an unofficial copy of your grades or degree progress report to meredithsears[at]ucla.edu

The Laboratory for Clinical Affective Psychophysiology (LCAP) is looking for dedicated undergraduate research assistants to help in their project investigating the influence of emotion and stress on cognitive functioning in patients across the prodromal, recent-onset and chronic phases of schizophrenia. In order to examine such research questions, this project will rely on a broad array of psychophysiological measures, including 128 channels of EEG activity, heart rate, electrodermal activity and cortisol, in order to delineate abnormal psychological and neurobiological processes in schizophrenia.

Research assistants will be primarily involved in psychophysiological data collection with schizophrenia patients and healthy individuals. Tasks will include: administering behavioral experiments (e.g., computerized tasks, questionnaires) while physiological data is collected, data entry and processing.

Requirements

1.	2-3 hour block of time needed to conduct experiments
2.	Multiple quarter commitment is strongly preferred (course credit is available)

How to Apply

Please send a resume (or curriculum vitae) with references as well as a copy of your grades (an unofficial transcript or copy of your Degree Progress Report from ursa.ucla.edu is totally fine) to gsholty[at]ucla.edu.

I’m looking for a team of 6 research assistants to work on two projects:

(1) Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy Coding Project: RAs will code video-recorded sessions of couple therapy for my dissertation project. RAs will be asked to observe sessions and rate each partner on 7 behaviors for each 5-minute segment of the session and to attend a weekly meeting with the other coders.

(2) Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy in Older Adults: This is a new study that I will begin recruitment for over the summer. The aim of this study is to examine changes in physiology and health outcomes over time in older adults who are participating in couple therapy. RAs on this project will be involved in recruitment and initial preparation for the study, with the option of being trained as assessors in the Relationship and Health Laboratory in the Fall.

RAs will primarily be involved in the first project as coders. However, in the first few weeks while you are training on the coding system, part of your time will be spent on tasks for the second project.

Requirements:

1. This position requires a commitment of 7 hours per week. Hours are flexible, except for the weekly meeting which we will schedule at the beginning of the summer.

2. You absolutely must be willing and able to commit to working in the lab through the summer and into Fall quarter if necessary. We cannot replace coders halfway through the project, so this is very important!

How to Apply:

Please send a resume, including your current GPA and a list of courses you have taken in Psychology, to Meghan McGinn at mmcginn[at]ucla.edu. We will schedule a very brief interview during Spring quarter. Note that you are not required to have research experience already for this position.
