Psi Chi at UCLA

Membership

Requirements for Membership

Membership in Psi Chi is open to all Psychology, Cognitive Science and Psychobiology majors.  One of our primary goals at UCLA Psi Chi is to assist our members in initiating into the national organization, while at the same time encouraging active participation in the local chapter.  To that end, UCLA Psi Chi recognizes and rewards three levels of membership: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Members who wish to initiate at any one of these levels must adhere to the following rules of membership:

  1. Must have attended Psi Chi meetings for a minimum of two quarters prior to initiation.
  2. Must earn a minimum of five participation points during each quarter of membership prior to initiation.
  3. Must attend a minimum of two chapter meetings during each quarter of membership prior to initiation, (points earned for attending meetings count toward the five point per quarter minimum).
  4. Must meet all of the requirements for one of the levels of membership, as outlined below, at the time of initiation:
    • Bronze
      • 3.0 cumulative GPA
      • 3.2 GPA in the Major

* Participation Points

Upon joining UCLA Psi Chi each member should purchase a membership card ($2) on which they will receive a stamp for each participation point earned. Participation points may be earned for attending meetings, participating in fundraising and other Psi Chi activities, and by doing volunteer work at UCLA or through a community organization. Opportunities for participation will be announced at meetings periodically throughout the quarter.

A comprehensive guide to earning points can be found here. Please remember that earning points is not restricted to items listed there; these are simply options that are consistently available every quarter.

Note:
Fill in your card throughout the quarter and then turn in your card by the deadline the current quarter. You will receive your card back at the beginning of the following quarter. You may also turn in your volunteer work completed for that quarter along with your card. Do not save up your points until initiation or you will not receive credit. To receive credit for volunteer hours you should provide a signed statement from a supervisor indicating the number of hours volunteered and contact information for verification. If you do not turn in your card at the end of the quarter by the due date, you will not be able to receive credit for the points you accrued that quarter!
